The call that matters most comes at three in the morning.
Criminal work does not keep office hours. The enquiries that decide whether somebody instructs you arrive from a custody suite, a family member in a panic, or a client who has just been told to attend an interview, and almost none of them arrive between nine and five.
Request demoWhat a missed enquiry costs here
Every other practice area on this site loses a fee when a call is missed. Criminal defence loses the client at the moment they most need one, and often to whoever the custody sergeant offers next. Out-of-hours cover is not a convenience here, it is the practice. The firms that grow are the ones that are reachable at 03:00, and staffing that with people is exactly what burns out a small defence team.
What Cam asks first.
The capture model is the same for every firm. What changes by area is which answers are worth having before anybody rings back.
- Whether the person is currently in custody, which changes everything about what happens next.
- Which station or court, and whether an interview time has been given.
- Whether the caller is the client or a family member calling on their behalf.
- Whether they have been offered a duty solicitor, and whether they have asked for your firm by name.
What actually changes for this practice area.
Not a different AI. The same Cam, working the front door and the fee-earner's own line, applied where it matters most for this kind of work.
01
Genuine out-of-hours cover on the line that is published, so a three-in-the-morning call reaches something other than an answerphone.
02
The urgent facts captured first, so the fee-earner who picks up is reading a location and an interview time rather than working out what the call was about.
03
Human-controlled handoff with an availability check, so a call that genuinely needs the on-call solicitor reaches them and one that does not is handled without waking them.
04
Rota-aware routing, so the person actually on call is the person the call goes to rather than whoever is first in a list.
One call, start to finish.
01
The call
03:10. A mother rings the office number because her son has been arrested and she has been told he can name a solicitor.
02
What Cam does
Cam answers, discloses what he is, and captures the station, whether an interview time has been set, and whether the duty solicitor has been offered. He checks whether the on-call solicitor is available before saying anything about connecting, and says he will try rather than promising.
03
What you get
The on-call phone rings with the station and the interview time already attached, or if it does not connect, the enquiry is logged with a confirmed callback number and marked at the top of the morning list.
FAQ
Criminal defence questions
Can Cam give advice to somebody in custody?
- No, and this is the area where that matters most. He does not advise on whether to answer questions, whether to accept the duty solicitor, or anything about the allegation. He captures where the person is, what time anything is happening, and how to reach the caller, and gets that to a solicitor. Every call opens with a disclosure that he is an AI coordinator, so nobody is misled about who they are speaking to.
Does this replace our out-of-hours rota?
- No. It covers the part of the rota that is currently answered by a voicemail or by whoever is awake, and it makes sure the call that genuinely needs the on-call solicitor reaches them with the facts attached. The solicitor still attends. What changes is that they are woken for the calls that need them and not for the ones that do not.
How does legal aid eligibility get handled?
- It does not get decided on the call. Cam captures what the caller says about their circumstances as stated, and the determination stays with the firm. Anything that looks like an eligibility assessment made by an assistant is a problem waiting to happen.
What WasilX doesn’t do here
WasilX doesn't advise anyone in custody, assess a case, or determine legal aid eligibility. It answers the line out of hours, captures where the person is and what time matters, and gets the on-call solicitor the facts.
